It might have taken Pinterest more than two full years to open its gates to the entire virtual world, but now that the social sharing service has moved beyond an invite-only basis, and has become available to Android and iPad users, there seems to be no stopping its expansion and growth.
The native Android Pinterest app, released less than two months back, has already been downloaded more than a million times. A vast majority of users praise the app. Described as intuitive, friendly and easy to use, the app has a 4.5 star average from more than 170,000 user evaluations in Google Play, so it’s so close to perfection that Pinterest can almost taste it.
But similar to its target audience (I’m talking about you, ladies), the Pinterest creators seem to never stop wanting more and more, which is why we are today welcoming the sixth (!) update of the Android app.
Like the first five tweaks, this new update is also not a major one, so the Pinterest app is now available in version 1.0.6. The changelog is far from massive, but you should notice that tall images are now bigger and easier to see. That’s particularly handy for those who use Android smartphones more in portrait mode than in landscape, and it again shows that Pinterest, unlike other major social networks, is less about talking and more about photo sharing.
It should be easier for users to pin content from favorite websites and to discover new boards by seeing where a pin has been repinned. Finally, this also brings bug “fixes based on great feedback from our community,” although we can’t say we’ve heard many users complaining of any kind of glitches.
No words yet on whether or not Pinterest plans to come out with a special app for Android tablets similar to the one for the Apple iPad. However, the recent hiring of Jon Jenkins, former engineering lead at Amazon, as head of engineering at Pinterest, is clearly signaling that there may be something special in the works. It would also be interesting to find out how has Pinterest’s user base has evolved after the launch of the native Android app, though we’re guessing it’s still a tad behind Facebook.
